When not properly treated used cooking oil is one of the major causes of water contamination.
- Oil creates a thin layer at the water’s surface, preventing oxygenation and causing the destruction of the ecosystem’s fauna and flora.
- One litre of oil contaminates up to 1 thousand litres of water.
- This amount of water is the equivalent of the average consumption of an European Citizen in 5 days.
- The problem is immense and overwhelming. In one year, over 40 Billion tons of oil are consumed at home. Almost half of it is wasted, which is enough to potentially contaminate the existing water in all Baltic Sea, for example.
